At some point, you might look down at your knitting and think, “Whoa! Why do I have so many stitches on my needle?” You’ve got more stitches than you cast on!
You, my friend, have accidentally added extra stitches to your work. It happens to most beginner knitters, so don’t beat yourself up about it. There’s one way to fix an added stitch, but it requires that you keep your eyes peeled so that you catch the little sneak before it gets embedded into your knitting!
Once the added stitch is several rows into your work, it’s pretty hard to fix. Like heart disease, the best remedy for added stitches is prevention! Yep. There’s really no easy way to patch up added stitches. The sooner you catch it, the better chance you have of getting rid of the little bugger. Check out the video for more details!

very displeased, not encouraging at all for a beginner knitter

Sorry to hear that, Bob. If you have the time, I’d love to hear how I can improve the video to make it better.

Thank you!!!!!! I was so frustrated trying to figure out how I was the David Copperfield of knitters having extra stitches appear out of thin air!!! Very easy to understand explanation. Thank you so very much!

Excellent video. I’m pretty sure I added the stitch by purling one in accidentally. I’m still trying to figure out how to tink back and fix though. I’m at the end of my row and in happened within the last five stitches. I’m only off by one and another video suggested knitting the last two together to make one, but that doesn’t really help you fix your problem correctly and learn. More of a cheat way to fix. I will just keep watching your video and hope I can undo the one I added.

Thank you so much SO MUCH. This has saved me TWICE now and is the only video I trust to help me fix my knitting. I’m not sure what Bob’s problem is, but this is EXTREMELY easy to follow, incredibly helpful to beginners and you make everything seem so SIMPLE.

I knew I was not crazy! I casted on 20 and suddenly had 31! I guess I’ll have to rip back a lot, but anyway, practice makes perfect 😀
Thanks a lot for the video!

Thank you for the video. Exactly what I needed to know . I shall be more careful and pay attention to what I am doing. I shouldn’t have waited until I’m almost 80 to learn how to knit.

I created an extra stitch while knitting a scarf consisting of a simple pattern of 3 knits following by 3 purls. I noticed I had an extra stitch while creating the 3 purls. I dropped the extra stitch when I noticed during my next row but now I am 20 rows in and am very bothered with the way that dropped extra stitch looks. Any advice? I don’t want to ladder down and stitch back up, because then I’ll have an extra stitch.
