In this post, you’ll learn how to knit a baby blanket. Specifically, the Baby Bobble Blanket! This is an adorable baby blanket studded with bobbles that make up a cute and quirky pattern.
Knitting a baby blanket is an incredibly special project. In addition to keeping baby warm, blankets are often cherished keepsakes that are passed down to future generations. Baby blankets can become family heirlooms!
To knit a baby blanket, follow along with the pattern below. Watch the video tutorial for more detailed step-by-step instructions, including how to knit a bobble and how to customise the size of the blanket.

Baby Blanket Materials & Notes
- 8 balls of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran in the color Baby Pink
- 40”/100cm 5mm circular needles
- 2 stitch markers
- tapestry needle
- scissors

- towels for blocking (optional)
Baby Blanket Yarn Recommendations:
Consider a Superwash wool, cotton, acrylic or bamboo yarn. These fibres can be washed in the washing machine, which makes cleaning much easier. These are some of my favourite baby blanket yarns:
- Deramores Studio DK Acrylic: a soft and sturdy 100% acrylic in a variety of pretty colors
- Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran 5 Ball Value Pack: a budget-friendly acrylic yarn
- Debbie Bliss Cotton DK: a super soft 100% cotton in muted and pastel colors
- King Cole Bamboo Cotton DK: a soft bamboo-cotton blend that’s perfect for baby items
Pattern Notes:
Gauge: 19sts/24 rows = 4”/10cm in stockinette stitch
Finished measurements:
Size before blocking: 27” (w) x 33” (h)
Size after blocking: 29” (w) x 36” (h)
Make Bobble: Knit into front and back, front and back, and front of the stitch. 5 sts made.
Turn work to WS. Purl the 5 sts.
Turn work to right side. Sl2 sts knitwise, K1, pass 2 slipped sts over first stitch. Sl1 knitwise, K1, pass last 2 sts over remaining st. 1 st remains. (Watch the video tutorial below for a detailed demonstration).
Joining a New Ball of Yarn
Many balls of yarn need to be joined to knit this blanket. My favourite methods include knitting the new and old yarn together and the Russian Join and Spit Splice methods.
Customising the Blanket
This blanket is sized for a baby, but it can be made smaller or larger. To change the width of the blanket, cast on a multiple of 6+1.
This means you’ll choose a number that is a multiple of 6 (ie. 36, 66, 120 etc.) and add 1 to it.
This is the number you will cast on (ie. 37, 67, 121).

Hi there,
I just wanted to say, I just love your site and your instruction. You are so easy to follow and make it a joy! I also purchased your everyday raglan which I am about to start. I truly thank you! Keep your amazing instructional videos coming!
I will purchase the baby blanket pattern tomorrow. Question for you, I would like to make it as a gift for a friend having a little girl in Mexico, do you have a recommendation for yarn that wouldn’t be too hot for the baby in an already warm climate?
Thank you,
Stephanie Basire
Best regards,
Stephanie Basire
Hi there, I would consider cotton yarn. It’s soft, light and breathable in hot weather. It’s also machine washable, so very easy to clean!
In what world is 32 or 64 a multiple of 6? Did you mean 8? Please proof your postings for accuracy. Or maybe hire an editor? This tutorial is completely wrong when you haven’t checked your math skills.
Hi there, you’re right. The example was wrong. I’ve since fixed it. However, casting on 6+1 is correct.
Hi thank you for this wonderful pattern! When it says knit the bobble repeat for a total of 9 times- is that inclusive or exclusive of the first bobble repeat? Should there be 9 or 10 bobble sections before the last bobble row and the final 10 rows of stockinette? Thank you!
Hi Jamie, the bobble repeat includes the bobble row plus the nine rows of stockinette.
