These candle cosies are great for turning empty glass jars into glowing ornaments. After knitting the cosy, pop in a candle or tea light and voila, the jar is transformed!
The patten is flexible and will require a bit of adjusting and customisation to fit your glass jar. I’ve included instructions within the pattern on how to adjust the pattern.
Candle Cosy Video Tutorial
Watch the video tutorial above for a step-by-step view on how to knit the candle cosy!
Project Time: 3-4 hours
Materials:
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in color Washed Teal
- 4mm double pointed needles (or long circulars for magic loop)
- glass jar
- tapestry needle
- scissors
The jars I’m using have a 2.75” and 3” diameter. Instructions will follow for both those sizes.
Candle Cosy Instructions:
CO 40 (44) sts and join in the round without twisting the sts
To adjust the pattern, make sure to cast on a multiple of 4 stitches
Knit in 2×2 rib until piece measures 0.5”
Increase Round for 2.75” jar: K2, KFB, K20, KFB, knit to the end of round (42, x sts)
Increase Round for 3” jar: *K10, KFB; repeat from * to end of round (48 sts)
To adjust the pattern, increase existing sts to a multiple of 6 by working KFB(s) evenly across the round
Eyelet Rib:
Rounds 1-3: *P1, K5; repeat from * to end of round
Round 4: *P1, SSK, YO, K1, YO, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round
Repeat Rounds 1-4 until cosy touches the base of the jar when worn.
Knit in 2×2 rib until cosy covers the base of the jar when worn.
The rib may not fit perfectly across the round, but because it’s on the bottom of the jar, no one will see it. If you’d like the 2×2 rib to fit perfectly, decrease 2 sts by working two K2togs across the round until you have a multiple of 4 sts on the needle.
Decrease Round: *k2tog; repeat from * to end of round (21, 24 sts)
Next Round for 2.75” jar: *k2tog; repeat from * to last st, K1 (11sts)
Next Round for 3” jar: repeat Decrease Round (12 sts)
For those adjusting the pattern: K2tog across the round. Repeat this decrease round again.
Cut a length of yarn and weave into remaining sts. Weave in ends.
Slide the cosy onto your jar, place a candle inside and light it up. The candle cosy is complete!
