Awesome site! Keep up the cool work!

Thank you, Silvia!

Where can I find your yarn? Only online?
Davina says
Hi Christine, Sheep & Stitch currently doesn’t sell yarn online… yet. If you’re referring to the KPC Yarn, yes it’s only available online for now.

Hi Davina thanks to you and your amazing videos I learnt how to knit and I’ve started on my second project a baby beanie, but I need some help! I’ve got to knit 40 rows in stockinette stitch, everything was fine till row 10 when I started to purl the new stitches on the right hand needle were twisting to the knit side! It was awkward knitting cos I felt like I should be knitting g not purlin so I ripped the row down and the same happened when I knitted the new row the knit row somehow turned to purl rows in the right hand needle. I’m stuck now, what should I do? I feel like it’s a simple silly mistake but I can’t figure it out. Help!
Davina says
Hi Tia, Hmm.. I’m not sure how the stitches on your right hand needle are twisting … unless your entire piece of knitting is twisted. That is, the whole piece is twisted over, but you would probably be able to see that since it would look very weird. If you can send a picture over to my email at davina@sheepandstitch.com, I can try to help you troubleshoot!
Lynn Johnson says
Hi Davina,
I’m not sure if anyone else is having issues trying to download your pattern, but I have been unsuccessful at several attempts. I’m wondering if you could send me your pattern for the Big Hat to my email address. I was able to print out pictures with NO instructions. Not sure what is happening. My laptop is not old but sometimes these things occur.
I’m watching your video and had some extra super bulky yarn I need to use up. The hat is cute. Thank you again in advance.
Davina says
Hi Lynn,
Usually the reason why the PDF is wonky is either it’s being opened in the browser (ie. Internet Explorer or Firefox), which is unstable because different versions of browser will render PDFs differently OR because your PDF reader (like Adobe Reader) is not updated to the latest version. I’d recommend downloading the latest version of Adobe Reader, which is free, and trying to open the PDF in Adobe Reader rather than opening it in your browser.
There’s more tips on the technical support page: https://sheepandstitch.com/technical-support/
Either way, I’ve just sent you an email with the PDF attached and the same instructions.
Hope this helps!
Brianna says
Hi! Thankyou very much for sharing your tips 🙂 I was just wondering where else I can get the same circular needles you used for the Big hat, or even just similar needles! I know you have the HiyaHiya ones but I can’t seem to find any 🙁
Thanks!
Davina says
Hi Brianna,
You can get a pair directly on the HiyaHiya online store: https://hiyahiyanorthamerica.shptron.com/p/16-15-us-10mm-hiyahiya-sharp-steel-circular-needle or on YarnBazaar: https://www.yarnbazaar.com/HiyaHiya-Steel-Circular-Needle-p/histcir16-15.htm
I haven’t shopped at either of these online stores, but they came up in the google search (Good old Google!) With big needles (10mm and up), you’ll have much better luck buying online than in physical stores unless you have a well-stocked yarn store in your area.
Brianna says
Thankyou so much! I was afraid I would get the wrong ones so I thought I would ask first 🙂 Thanks heaps!
suzana says
Any tips for finding my place in circular knitting, my marker fell off in my bag and I didn’t notice it till several stitches in…help if you can!??
Davina says
Hey Suzana,
I usually look for the tail end of my yarn on my cast on edge. This the leftover from the longtail cast on, and it also marks the beginning of my round. So, once you find your tail end, eyeball it up to the place where you’re at in your knitting and your beginning will be close by.
If you think you’ve found the beginning of the round (BOR), then pull back your stitches to that place. Then, count your rounds, starting from the cast on edge to the point where you’re at. Count them from the first stitch on your left needle and the first stitch on your right needle. If you have the same number of your rounds, then you’ve found your beginning of the round!
Tip: If you’re knitting garter stitch in the round, you’ll have a vertical seam that will be the big giveaway. Your BOR will be right between that seam.

Hi Davina
Your videos are amazing! I’m now about to start my 2nd project which will be the big hat
I have circular needles but they are longer 31.5″ can I just work the hat on them and not change to DPN
I did buy some double point needles but the biggest I could find was 6.00mm is this to small
Thanks
Davina says
Hi Kayleigh,
Hmm.. it will be really tough to knit the Big Hat on circulars that are 31.5″. Generally, the circular needles need to be *smaller* than the size of your project. Your best bet is to work on DPNs, but as you’ve pointed out, the ones you’ve got are only 6mm, which is smaller than what the pattern calls for. I don’t think you’ll be able to get gauge with such a small needle size. My advice: either get DPNs or circs that are the recommended size/length. Hope that helps!

As a new knitter I found your instruction video very helpful. I have been learning to knit in the round and would love to see more of how to convert different pattern stitches from flat to round. Or maybe there is a formula to help us newbies figure out how to do it. also, different types of cast on’s and bind off’s and when to use them. These are just a couple of suggestions for videos. Thank you again. Look forward to seeing more 🙂
Davina says
Thanks for your comment, Donna! Such good suggestions, especially the one about different cast ons and bind offs. I’m writing that one down!
As for stitch patterns in the round vs on flat needles, there’s no formula that works across the board. One way to do it is to chart the stitch pattern on paper, and then convert it from flat knitting to knitting in the round or vice versa. Charting helps to visualise the stitches. This process can be fairly time consuming and requires some experimenting.
The other option is to consult a stitch dictionary that includes instructions for knitting in the round and knitting flat. Surprisingly, many dictionaries don’t include these dual instructions (they’re almost always only instructions for knitting flat), probably because it’s pretty time consuming to do!
However, I’ve been told that there is a dictionary that includes comprehensive instructions on knitting in the round and knitting flat for 150 stitch patterns! And that book is “Up, Down, All-Around Stitch Dictionary: More than 150 stitch patterns to knit top down, bottom up, back and forth, and in the round” by Wendy Bernard. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/1617690996/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_n0Azwb1GT4P7T) I haven’t read this book, but judging from the comments and reviews, it’s a good one, and it’s going on my Christmas wish list.
Hope this helps!
Christine says
Hi Davina,
May I know when is the Graphite colour of the TJOCKT, Martta the Merino Bulky Yarn is going to be available?
Regards,
Christine
Davina says
Hi Christine,
Unfortunately, we won’t be restocking Martta the Merino. We’ll be making room for new yarns in the new year. Thanks for your comment!
tiw says
Hi Davina,
May I ask who developed and who designed your sheepandstitch website?
Davina says
Hey! I actually designed the site myself and had it developed by a web agency called Anchored Designs.
cadbury chocolate says
Hi Davina, do you have any clue when you will be restocking all the currently sold out yarn
Davena says
I was stumbled on your beginners video and thought it was the best for someone who has never even touched yarn like myself! Then at the end you sign off and I learn we have the same name! How cool! Must be my destiny to knit! Thanks for the motivation!
Davina says
Hey Davena! That’s so cool! I’ve only ever met one other Davina in my life, and it was super surreal! The fact that we kind of looked alike was also weird. I’ve also met one Davida and people always got us confused!
Angie Peláez says
Hello Davina!
I live in Hong Kong and I want to buy yarn, but don’t know if you are already selling it. Do you have a physical store? Once you mentioned you were not selling yarns online, but at a store?
If not, what would you recommend?
Congrats for “Sheep and stitch”
A
Davina says
Hey Angie,
Sorry, we’re currently out of stock of our Finnish Yarn TJOCKT. We only sell online, so no physical store for now! If you like the TJOCKT yarn, you can check out tjockt.com. I believe they sell the Martta the Merino yarn that we were selling.
Alternatively, you can check out some local yarn stores for bulky yarn. There is a yarn store in Mong Kok called Double Knit (https://doubleknityarn.com.hk/en/) and another in Wan Chai called Cheer Wool. I believe both places carry bulky weight yarn, but it may be a good idea to call in advance. Hope this helps!

i loved your video for beginners showing how to knit a scarf. It is the best I’ve found. Do you have a video, or can you explain, how to continue knotting the scarf when your yarn runs out and you need to start with a new roll of yarn? Thanks
Davina says
Hey Jessica!
Check out this video on “Joining a New Ball of Yarn” https://sheepandstitch.com/joining-a-ball-of-yarn/ Hope it helps!
Rosa says
Hi, do you currently have any kits available?
Davina says
Hi Rosa,
Unfortunately, the kits and yarn have all sold out and we won’t be restocking. We’ll launch a new line of yarn this Fall, so do stay tuned for that!
Barbara Clark says
Hi Sheep and Stitch,
I am new to the art of knitting and am journaling my progress on blogspot. I worked one of your hat patterns that was a free download (it came out super nice, if I do say so myself!) and would like to share. Do you have legal/moral objections if I embed the pattern on my blog with attribution, or would you prefer me to link to your site only?
Thanks!
Davina says
Hey Barbara!
Feel free to embed the YouTube tutorial videos for the Big Hat on your website. However, please do not embed a link to the PDF pattern. Please link back to the original pattern page on sheepandstitch.com where users can download the PDF pattern. A link back as a way of attribution is always appreciated.
Thanks for checking in and glad your hat turned out well!
Wilson says
Hi Davina,
Can I buy yarn in your online shop? I don’t know why I can’t signed in the web.
Thanks
Davina says
Hi Wilson,
Unfortunately, the yarn and kits are all sold out. Sorry about that.
Seah Hui Qi says
Hi. Can i buy the yarn via online??
Lauren says
Any idea when the yarn and yarn kits will be back in stock?
Davina says
Hi there, sorry! The yarn is sold out and will not be restocked. If you’re interested in the yarn, you can purchase directly from tjockt.com. I believe they still sell the “Martta the Merino” yarn on their website and etsy store.
Yolanda Hernandez says
Looking everywhere for a tutorial on the quilted lattice stitch and I’m not having any luck
You’re you tube videos are the BEST you seriously taught me how to knit!!!!
Leona says
Hey, this site is great and really helpful! But when I wanted to buy a yarn, I couldn’t, don’t know why.. I’m a beginner, so can you please help me and tell/show me where can I buy the same yarn from your video “how to knit a scarf for beginners”, thanks!!
Davina says
Hey Leona! The yarn is all sold out. You can check out tjockt.com. The yarn is called “Martta the Merino.” I believe they still sell this yarn on their website and etsy shop. Alternatively, you can check out any bulky weight yarn at your local craft store. If you’re in the US or Canada, Lion Brand is a popular affordable line of yarn. They have a yarn called “Thick and Quick” that is comparable in terms of yarn weight.
Meishia K says
I just wanted to say thank you for your site. It doesn’t seem as though you’re still active on it but it’s been so helpful to me. I’m a super beginner. I’ve searched all over for tips and tutorials and patterns. Even for beginners it looks like hieroglyphics! It is overwhelming to say the least. I found your site and felt at ease watching and attempting your beginner scarf tutorial. I did it! It’s the 2nd thing I’ve ever knit and I love it. You have a skill at teaching. I just watched the seed stitch cowl video and I’m going to attempt something with that. Seriously, I would pay for your tutorials. I’ve learned more from those two videos than I have anywhere else. Just wanted you to know.
Davina says
Hey Meishia! Thanks so much for your kind comment. I appreciate it! Super awesome that you just completed a scarf! I plan on updating the site with new videos this year, so do visit again. It might be easier to subscribe directly on the Sheep and Stitch Youtube channel so you can be notified of new tutorial and pattern videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/sheepandstitch If I can ask, what are you interested in learning to knit? Would love to know!

can i make the raglan sweater with a different scale? cotton yarn 4″ = 20 st.?
is there a formula for conversion
nancy ogden says
I found the conversion information
https://www.thedietdiary.com/knittingfiend/OrderForms/conversion%20pages/ConversionPage.html
Davina says
Hi Nancy, hope that converter works out for you! It’s the first time I’ve seen it, but I’ll be sure to check it out in more detail. Good luck!
John Jessen says
Another raglan sweater question, if you buy the plan will there be different sizes in the instructions? A size large enough for a men’s medium? Is this truly a beginners project (after scarf, and blankets)
Thank you for your great videos on You Tube for beginners!
Davina says
Hi John!
Yes, there are multiple sizes for the raglan. Take a look on the raglan project page here: https://sheepandstitch.com/learn/how-to-knit-everyday-raglan/ There’s a section on the finished size dimensions of the sweater.
If those finished measurements are similar to your own sweaters, or a sweater that you can fit into, then you can conceivably knit that size and expect it to fit. The sweater is shaped fairly loosely with no shaping in the chest or waist. The only area where I foresee some need for customisation is in the sleeves. In order to make the sleeves more fitted, and thus a bit more feminine, I added in some sleeve decreases. For a men’s size, you’ll probably not need or even want those decreases, so you can ignore those instructions in the pattern.
As for whether this raglan is truly for beginners, I’d say that if you are comfortable knitting, purling, knitting in the round with circulars, knitting on double pointed needles, and casting on, then you’ve got all the skills you need to knit up this sweater. It’s a good first sweater project for those who have knit a bunch of scarves and hats and are ready to “level up,” so to speak 😛
Hope that helps!
